What to wear in Vienna?

Comfortable Clothes for Each Month & the Fashion Style in Vienna.

Vienna is Austria's most sophisticated city, however you don't have to be concerned with prudish attitudes or formality. Events and certain venues may require formal dress but casual, not untidy, clothing is common. In fact Austrians, similar to other European countries, dress somewhat conservatively and over-the-top skimpy clothing is not considered a good look.

Clothes for the Seasons

Dressing for the Weather in Vienna

Layers of warm clothing and shoes with slip resistant soles are needed for cold icy Vienna winters. Spring and summer are somewhat similar. Layer clothing for easy changeability and make sure a water resistant coat or jacket (along with an umbrella) is at hand as the city does get its share of rain.

  • During winter, keep warm with a heavy coat, scarf, gloves, and hat. If you love ice skating, open-air rinks are fun if you're dressed properly for the cold. If you're into fur (whether fake or real) you will see plenty of people wearing it in Vienna to fight the freezing cold. The coldest months are December, January, and February.
  • Winter boots should have thick rubber soles as even medium thick soles can get extremely hard in the freezing winter climate.
  • Light clothing is enough during the summer season, just make sure you have a light jacket on hand in case it suddenly gets cool or rains, which can happen unexpectedly. June, July, and August are the hottest months. Surprisingly, shorts are not worn often by women in the city, not even teen girls wear them.
  • Venues like the opera and classical music concerts require business casual attire; however, evening wear is recommended.
  • Besides a good pair of winter boots, be sure to have a pair of comfy walking shoes in your closet and make sure they're waterproof as well. Remember, Vienna is known for its downpours!
  • The Viennese (the name for Vienna residents) like dressing well for the evening; however, you can get by with a nice pair of ‘rip-free’ jeans coupled with a nice shirt or blouse.

Tips for Women

  • Jeans are not the most popular casual attire in Vienna. Most women wear skirts and dresses.
  • Forget the high-heels except for an evening out at a special event.
  • Shawls or pashmina are popular and a nice addition for your wardrobe as they can be used throughout the year.

Tips for Men

  • It's not that jeans are passé in Vienna, they're just the norm. Most men wearing jeans are from the younger generation and most older men wear casual slacks. If you have a mix of casual pants and jeans, regardless of your age, you'll fit right in.

Year-Round Tip

Probably the most important item you should have in your closet for the Vienna weather is a good pair of shoes and/or boots. Even if you're not the hiking type, it's just easier and more comfortable getting around with practical shoes on your feet. Plus, when the city goes through rainy or cold spells, at least you'll be well prepared!
