Clothes for each Season

Antalya Weather

Due to Antalya's location on a clifftop with a commanding view of the sea and nearness to the Taurus mountain range, the city is shielded from the cold northerly winds; thereby, maintaining soothing warm temperatures all-year-round. The climate has a Mediterranean feel with two major seasons though they still count four seasons. The summers are long and dry and the winters are mild and brief. Temperatures normally range between 41°F and 93°F ( 5°C and 34°C) with 300 days of blissful sunshine annually and little rainfall. Out of the 77 days of rainfall, winter has the most with summers dry and full of sunlight.

Spring

The spring season introduces the end of the cool winter and the start of the long hot summer. There is little rain in spring with the most falling in March and April. The sun is reasonably continuous throughout the year with twelve wonderful hours per day during springtime. Though the weather becomes considerably warmer, you should wear a light jacket. If you go swimming, try one of the indoor heated swimming pools.

Summer

Summers are long and last from May till September. Temperatures dip in the evening so you will need a variety of clothes to remain comfortable. It's doesn't get freezing, but a light sweater or a light jacket should do. Light and breezy attire during the daytime will carry you into the evening as well if you have a light jacket with you. A nice pashmina scarf will also work. Summer clothing will last you from June to September comfortably. Don't forget to wear a good sunscreen and reapply throughout the day.

Fall

Rainfall increases during the fall season from October to November. Therefore, it is crucial to have an umbrella and water resistant jacket. Luckily, Antalya experiences only about 77 days a year of rain. The nights will become colder so be prepared to switch from a light overcoat to a heavier one during the evening.

Winter

Antalya's winters are short. The months of December, January, and February are when temperatures drop the lowest with January being the coldest. Winter is also the wettest season though the yearly rain is minimal. When precipitation does occur, it's usually in the form of short and heavy thunderstorms with light rainfall not far behind. However, the sun is very gracious in Antalya and returns with all its glory after the thunderstorm disappears. Be sure to dress properly with adequate rain wear that will keep you dry and warm.

A Bit About the Local Customs

Turkish society is reasonably tolerant and the country's religious and political leanings are somewhat separated. However, inhabitants do adhere to religious customs. For example, when visiting a mosque, one must take off their shoes and women must cover their head, shoulders, and arms. No mini-skirts or shorts and men are not permitted to wear shorts as well. Shoes must be left at the door. Doors to mosques are open to all and silence is required while inside. If you don't have the correct attire for entering the mosque, something will be given to you at the mosque entrance for free. Clothing should be modest and when visiting someone else's home, don't forget to remove your shoes. Overall, Antalya is no different from the rest of the country in this respect.

The Most Practical Way to Dress in Antalya

In some respects, you can wear pretty much what you want. Attire should be modest. Remember, it is a primarily Muslim city in Turkey and you will have to coverup for the most part but not excessively.

- Women
Tank tops and shorts are a no-no. For hot summers, a sundress and nice cotton attire works well. Skirts and dresses should be below the knee. Tops with sleeves to the elbow and below are permitted. Slacks are also allowed. If you go to the beach you can wear what you like; however, when leaving the beach, be sure to cover up. During the winter a heavy jacket or sweater will be needed. When visiting mosques dress in subdued colors in non-revealing attire.

- Men
Shorts are fine on the beach but not for everyday street wear. Bermuda shorts work as well as cargo and khaki pants. T-shirts are allowed along with jeans. A tapered shirt and nice slacks are required for mosques and more formal establishments. During the winter a nicely fitted blazer and/or a wool coat will suffice. Nice sweaters with a shirt underneath are fine.

- Children
The rules of dress for children are not too different from adults. Tank tops and shorts should only be worn on the beach. Jeans, pants, or t-shirts with sleeves to the elbow or longer are also required. Jackets for cooler weather and long tunics with leggings also work for little girls. Layering is fine for both boys and girls.

As far as footwear goes, wear comfortable shoes just as you would anywhere else if you walk a lot. Keep in mind, that the resort has expansions of high-terrain that's may prove difficult if you are not used to walking very much. Sneakers and closed toe comfortable shoes are advised. Flip-flops are fine on the beach.

Additional Suggestion

If you find yourself in need of additional clothing when shopping, bargain with the locals in the retail stores and markets and bring money in small denominations. This will make it easier to pay whatever price you bargained for. In addition, it prevents the merchant from pretending to have no change, which could automatically increase the price.

With fantastic beaches and good weather, this part of Turkey offers old city charm with plenty of excursion passages. Keep in mind, Antalya is not solely about stunning beaches and aqua parks. The fabulous ski resort Saklikent is also located there. The resort is an idea place for active recreation with a broad range of entertainment for locals and visitors.
