How's the Weather?
Well, the summers are hot and sticky. The winters are wet and cold. And it's semi-cloudy throughout the year. The scope of Nashville's weather and temperature is reasonably moderate in comparison to many other cities in the United States. Temperatures can go as low as 17°F and as high as 107°F. Yet, this is not the usual climate conditions. Temps basically range from a low of 29°F to a high of 90°F throughout the seasons.
The highest rainfall is in spring during the month of May. Keep in mind, the mid-Tennessee area including Nashville has roughly twelve tornado warnings per-year usually in March, April, and May. One tornado is either detected or hits mid-Tennessee each year.
Summers are humid. June, July, and possibly August is the time to wear light, breathable clothes preferably in an organic fabric. The fall season gets a bit nippy; therefore, it's best to dress in layers, particularly during late September through October and November. Snowfall is only a few inches during the winter.
The weather is a bit unpredictable in April but not overly so. If you keep a lightweight jacket or sweater for unexpected weather changes, you'll be just fine.
In a nutshell, Spring, Summer, and Fall are the most comfortable times of year in Nashville with less probability of cramping your fashion style. What's more, between the months of April and October the city really comes alive.
What to Wear in Nashville and When
The town is rather casual and a variety of dress styles are accepted. At the same venue may see people in formal dress and other guests wearing jeans and t-shirts! Every style of attire is spotted in any part of town regardless of the venue or event. With exception, a small number of restaurants may require a dress code, like jackets for men. But it's not the norm.
Because of the intense daytime sun, wearing a brimmed hat or even carrying an umbrella to block the sun is advised. A good sunscreen is also suggested. It gets muggy too, which is a no-no for synthetic materials. Natural fabrics feel better against the skin in hot muggy climates. Shorts, short-sleeve t-shirts and tank tops work well during daytime hours. Luckily, summer nights are cooler. A light jacket or sweater and long pants should be enough to ward off the chill. During the muggiest times of the year when insects can get on your nerves, keep an insect repellent with you. Or, if the scent is not too strong, place a dryer sheet in your purse or jacket pocket. It will keep the mosquitoes, gnats, and other insects away.
Western style dress is most prominent during the winter season. January being the coldest month with temperatures reaching zero degrees and wind chills that feels biting cold against the skin. If you like cowboy boots and blue jeans, this is the time to show em' what you've got. Snow is not unusual, but it disappears quickly. Still, it gets pretty cold. Long-johns (long underwear for men) or stockings, a heavy coat or jacket, sweater, and scarf will help keep you warm.
Wear Shoes Made for Walking
You should invest in comfy shoes if they are not already part of your wardrobe. Downtown Nashville is alpine and comfortable footwear is a must. Be ready for a lot of walking if you plan to check-out popular sites like the Country Music Hall or the Parthenon. Make sure your shoes are designed to support your feet especially the arch and heel area. You could easily spend two to three hours extolling and admiring town landmarks. If your shoes are uncomfortable for walking, your feet will pay the price later. And if you really want to "kick up your heels" take line-dancing lessons at one of the many venues in the city. Don't forget to wear attire that allows you to move about comfortably.
By the way, Nashville has amazing food. Everything from down-home meals to upscale places with a no-jeans dress code are everywhere. This mid-size city is an amalgamation of southern-charm, urban living with plenty to keep you busy.
