The most noted being Elvis Presley Graceland, Beale Street, and the Blues Hall of Fame. There's also the National Civil Rights Museum, Memorial to Martin Luther King Jr, NBA Basketball team the Memphis Grizzlies, and an award-winning zoo. Pleasing soul food and a unique culture makes the city a place you never want to forget.
Memphis is an urban assemblage of top attractions, history, and of course, music. With so much to offer, it's no secret that the city has a down-to-earth vibe that gels with a variety of cultures. Therefore, what to wear in Memphis consists of a plethora of genres. Anything from hippie styles from the 60s to your best evening wear will blend into the Memphis, Tennessee scene.
Memphis Weather
Warm summers and an abundance of sunny days offers ample opportunities for outdoor enjoyment. If you are the outdoorsy type, you probably already have the gear to support your lifestyle. Shorts, t-shirts, running gear, supportive walking shoes, bike, skateboard, everything that makes exploring the outdoors fun and comfortable is part of the whole Memphis scene. In addition, you should stock-up on rain gear as well. Springtime in Memphis is filled with lovely blooms of forsythia and magnolia flora but it also has its share of intense thunderstorms and tornado threats.
The weather in Memphis is the most pleasant in April and May or October and November. These months are a short relief from the long uneasy summers where temperatures reach as high as 90 degrees Fahrenheit with high humidity. Still, summer is the city's peak time of the year. Winters are cold with daytime temperatures going below freezing with intermittent snow.
Very cold days, snowy weather, and temperatures that drop below freezing are the norm in Memphis; however, the city does have its share of cold weather. It's not such a big deal though. Just wear whatever you need to stay warm like a fleece jacket, scarf, maybe a hat and gloves. Wear your coolest jacket with an ushanka or ear-flap-hat that originated in Russia to fight the cold. They're popular all over the world!
Dressing for Memphis Means Being as Casual as You Like
It's easy to chill-out in Memphis. The city is as casual as it gets. Easygoing gear is the call of the day with flip-flops, shorts, jeans, sneakers, short sporty jackets, etc. The people of Memphis even make casual look casual, if that makes sense. Nonetheless, the city is not without glamor. Downtown you will see people wearing formal clothing and high-end garb when dining at nice restaurants or on a river cruise. Just remember that it gets quite humid in summer, so dress to stay cool. Lightweight materials like cotton, chambray, linen, and rayon for days when the heat is dry are ideal. Though synthetic and not as breathable as cotton, rayon is a lightweight fabric and drapes well. Shorts, jeans, a t-shirt, a comfy pair of shoes, sunglasses, and sunscreen will easily get you through the Memphis summer. Remember, the city has more sunny days than Miami and that's saying a lot!
